What’s The Difference Between Autonomous Robots and Controlled Robots?
An autonomous robot versus a controlled robot can operate the same, but the robot brain is much different. Watch the below as Josh explains the big difference between autonomous and controlled robots.
Now let’s take a look at autonomous robots versus controlled robots. An autonomous robot has the capability to move on its own, and it can make decisions based on sensor input. This allows the robot to technically have a mind of its own, operating in a single capacity without direction or guidance.
A controlled robot does not operate so self-sufficiently. Think of a controlled robot as more like you are just taking a remote control and moving it and telling it where to go.
This is not to say that an autonomous robot is not or cannot be controlled by a remote control. Quite often at Inertial Sense, we combine the two where parameters are set up using a remote control.
Once those parameters are saved and set, a geofence can be introduced of where the robot is supposed to operate and things of that nature. It can then work within those parameters autonomously without remote control assistance.

An autonomous robot versus a controlled robot.
An autonomous robot can move on its own, it can make decisions based on sensor input. But a controlled robot is more like you’re just taking a remote control and moving it and telling it where to go.
And we often do combine the two where we set up parameters using remote control. But then after those parameters are saved and set, things like a geofence of where the robot’s supposed to operate and things like that, then it can work within those parameters autonomously.
