Having a calibrated IMU is critical to your robotic device receiving accurate information and better accuracy. Watch the video below as Walt explains the importance of a calibrated IMU and how it applies to you.

What Is a Calibrated IMU?

A calibrated IMU is where a factory sensor that’s manufactured by another company, is run through a process of cycling through temperature and motion by Inertial Sense. As a result, we can prescribe a calibration that is unique to that IMU that is stored on the IMU and goes with it.

This is similar to someone going to the eye doctor for an eye exam, and the doctor says you will need glasses or contacts. You are then prescribed glasses or contacts to correct your vision. This is essentially what is done for each individual IMU when it is calibrated.

Who Should Get One?

A calibrated IMU will give you a lower drift rate while giving you higher accuracy. The net result is that your Kalman filter, or the filter that is being used to fuse the IMU data, will be more accurate.

With Inertial Sense products, when you place your order, you will receive one out of the box. This allows you and your company to save time and effort to calibrate the IMU and allows you to allocate that time and effort to other tasks within the project and focus on more important things.

What Is a Calibrated IMU?

Calibrated IMU is one where we take a factory sensor that’s manufactured by another company, and we run it through a process of cycling through temperature and motion. And as a result, we’re able to prescribe a calibration that is unique to that IMU that is stored on and goes with that.

So in essence, we’re giving prescription glasses or correction for each individual IMU.

So Why Would You Want One?

Calibrated IMU gives you lower drift rates, higher accuracy. The net result is that your Kalman filter or your filter that’s fusing the IMU data will be more accurate.

With Inertial Sense products, you get one out of the box, which saves you time and effort and allows you to allocate those resources to other more important activities.
